Couch Or Sofa? Potato Or Potato?

You might be asking yourself what is the difference between “couch” and “sofa”? In fact, there isn’t any difference between those two nowadays. It depends on the part of the country whether you would use one word more often over the other. Couch sounds more like a part of slang in some parts of the country. That’s why I suggest sofa in writing, sounds like better language.

When somebody says couch over sofa, it sounds like the person is talking about the comfort. For example, sitting in front of the tv on Sunday evening with their family. On the other side, when somebody wants to buy sofa it sounds like the person is more interested in the house decoration. The word sofa just sounds more sophisticated.

This is why you can notice that when people are decorating a living room, they find “couch” more appropriate than if they were decorating another room. That’s also because “couch” more closely relates to the comfort.

If you noticed at the beginning, I mentioned: nowadays. In the past, you couldn’t tell these two words were synonyms. The word comes from French. Couches had legs like chairs and were without the arms. You can easily imagine ladies sitting or laying on them. The root of the word couch is Arabic. Their version of this furniture was different, with shorter legs, more like a bench. But nowadays, the furniture has changed and you cannot tell such difference. Another difference is that often now, it’s a three-piece suite.

I guess it wouldn’t be right to correct somebody who prefers to say either “couch” or “sofa”.

Your Home’s First Impression

You have walked into your home so often that you have probably forgotten what it looks like. To you, it just looks like home. But your home will make a significant impression on your visitors. It will feel inviting or uninviting, comfortable or formal, lived-in or sterile. To make your home inviting to visitors, take a step back and take a fresh look at your home starting outside your front door.

Is the entryway well lit? Visitors need to be able to see steps and other obstacles outside your door and as they enter the house. Light the area well enough so the visitor can see the threshold of the door and at least ten feet on either side of the door.

After you enter your home, consider the rest of the lighting. Accent lighting and lamps are warmer and less harsh than overhead lighting. A dim hallway to the bathroom is unfriendly. A back door to a deck or patio should be at least as well lit as the front door.

As you enter each room, does the arrangement of the furniture block your way, or invite you in? To be inviting, any living room or similar room should have ample seating, a coffee or end table within reach of every seat, and no clutter on these surfaces. In small rooms, you can add seating with large floor pillows that can otherwise be stored under your sofa and you can store clutter in baskets under your coffee table. In large rooms, arrange seating into two or three conversation areas that flow together. Store clutter in built-in cabinets or in a basket by your chair.

Is your furniture comfortable? Sure, your favorite perch probably is comfy, or you would not sit there. But how is the rest of your seating? Try a different seat each night and see how it sits. Also ask yourself if you have a comfortable place to sit your drink, a good view of the television, etc. Even if some of your furniture is uncomfortable for you, it may be comfortable for someone of a different height, so it is actually good if your seating varies some.

Do you have anything on the walls? Quit procrastinating! One or two larger focal pieces of art with a few smaller accent pieces will give your home some personality and give guests something to look at. You might already have items lying around your house (or stored in your closet) that you have not even considered as potential decoration.

Quilts and rugs can be wall hangings. Fancy hats can line a wall as an interesting, functional border. Old curtains can be hung and left closed to make a faux window or tied-back to frame a collection of pictures.

By looking at your home as if it is the first time you have ever been there will help you gain the perspective of a visitor to your home. Note the changes you can make to give your home a more inviting feel. Often, major changes can be made using what you already have.
